JOSH

Josh pressed the bell to stop the bus outside the university even though ten other students were already standing ready to get off at the same stop. He left the car at home on uni days because students who live within a three-kilometre radius of campus didn’t qualify for student parking permits and the casual parking rates were too high. He walked with the group of students, most of them people he already knew from local high schools, through the pedestrian underpass and entered the top of the Great Walk that traversed the campus from the highway to the river. At the highway end, the walkway was shaded by Moreton Bay fig trees that hung heavy branches overhead and gave the campus a sweet figgy smell at the end of each summer. Beyond their trunks, Josh could see the ducks in the reflection pool and the sandstone arches of the Winthrop Hall Undercroft. Being one of the largest spaces on campus, the Undercroft was where most students had taken at least one exam in first year, and Josh and his friends could all tell stories of gazing at the ducks while they tried to recall the content of their Biology 101 courses during their three-hour allotted time.

Passing the sandstone Arts Building on his left and then the library on his right, Josh came to the cricket ground, where two teams were warming up. Each set of players had laid out their coffin-shaped bags along opposite sides of the weatherboard pavilion. Some of Josh’s friends were playing today and later he would take his lunch out to the edge of the ground and watch for a while.

Opposite the oval, Josh found himself a table and pulled out his textbook for his 3pm tutorial. He hadn’t finished the required reading yet and wanted to get it done before lunch. He was halfway through the final pages on the properties of geographical information systems when a tall, thin man in a dark suit with a takeaway coffee sat down at the next table. He was joined by an equally tall and thin young man in jeans. Supervisor and research student, thought Josh. They were discussing the research design and statistical methods the student would need to use. Josh had no interest in research statistics. He intended to go straight from his bachelor’s degree to the workplace. But he could see the student in profile, and he looked familiar. Not that this was startling. Most people on this campus were friends or friends of friends or people he had bumped into at parties, so many faces were familiar. He couldn’t place this guy though.

Josh went back to his reading – he had to fit in a two-hour lab at 10am – with the occasional glance at the student at the next table. He read for a few minutes, then opened up his browser and typed pregnant mice into the search bar. He got 34,300,000 results and clicked on the second one, how can I
